Environment

The GCS integrates efficient resource management and environmental protection into its business objectives, operating under the principles of precaution and conservation of the natural environment to minimise the impact of its operations. Group companies carry out various activities, all of which are directly dependent on natural resources and have an associated impact. However, this impact is not only seen as a challenge, but also as an opportunity to generate shared value and move towards a more sustainable model. Likewise, due to the climate emergency, the GCS aims to contribute to the transition to a low carbon economy by promoting products and services that have a smaller impact on the environment and improving the efficiency of processes in its activities.

As a result of these commitments, the company has defined an environmental management framework comprising the Group's Environmental Policy, approved by the Board on 14 November 2018 and updated on 17 December 2024, which is articulated by the different management systems implemented in the Group companies.

For this reason, the main environmental measures implemented by the GCS companies are governed by the basic principles of action developed in the policy. These guidelines are flexible enough to accommodate the specific procedures and mechanisms of each of the Group companies.

With this vision in mind, the Group works in several key areas that make up its environmental strategy, as set out below:

GCS does not see environmental challenges as isolated issues, but as an interconnected set of challenges and opportunities. Action in one area generates impacts in others, and it is precisely in this synergy that the Group's true capacity for transformation lies. Each measure taken not only protects the environment, but also creates value for people and society as a whole.

Climate change

As a global company, the GCS is aware of the important role it can play in the fight against climate change. Therefore, the GCS has established, as part of the objectives of its Sustainability Master Plan, the promotion of energy efficiency and the reduction of emissions in its business activities, with the objective of achieving climate neutrality (Net Zero) in 2045.

To this end, in 2024, the GCS developed a first GCS Climate Change Mitigation Transition Plan (CCCTMP), which will continue to be updated, completed and strengthened throughout 2025 and beyond.

Levers and measures applicable to the reduction of Scope 1 and 2 emissions:

  1. Efficiency: the acquisition of more efficient machinery, the optimisation of processes through digitalisation and innovation, and the use of sustainable materials that promote the circular economy.
  2. Transition to green fuels: GCS is driving the transition to renewable fuels through the acquisition of more efficient equipment and the use of hybrid, electric or hydrogen-based technologies.
  3. Green energy: GCS is promoting self-generation and the consumption of renewable energies, as well as the purchase of electricity with guarantee of origin certificates, with a clear focus on decarbonisation.

Levers and measures applicable to the reduction of emissions from scope 3:

  1. Improvements in design and planning: Promote the sustainable design of projects with a focus on embedded and operational carbon reduction, as well as the incorporation of circular economy measures from the planning stage.
  2. Efficiency in transportation: GCS promotes local procurement and the use of renewable fuels in logistics and mobility.
  3. Low-carbon shopping: GCS is working on a detailed analysis of its supply chain and collaboration with strategic partners committed to sustainability.
  4. Sustainable investment: GCS is committed to investing in projects aligned with its commitment to the environment and social welfare.

Transverse lever: Training and awareness-raising

GCS promotes awareness-raising initiatives for all its stakeholders, from employees to suppliers and clients, in order to create a culture of sustainability and ensure that everyone is part of the change.

Pollution

Beyond greenhouse gas reduction, GCS actively works to minimise other forms of pollution that affect both the environment and public health.

The transition to renewable energy not only reduces the carbon footprint, but also reduces the emission of air pollutants. In addition, GCS implements prevention and remediation measures in all its projects, ensuring the application of best practices to avoid soil and water contamination and mitigate any impact on the communities in which it operates.

Water management

Water is a limited resource and essential for environmental balance and human well-being. GCS is aware of the importance of managing this resource responsibly, ensuring its availability for future generations.

The Group works to optimise water use in all its activities by analysing and implementing measures to reduce consumption, promoting the reuse of wastewater and protecting water bodies in the areas where it operates. In this way, GCS minimises its impact on aquatic ecosystems and reinforces its commitment to sustainable water management.

Biodiversity

Within the framework of GCS's Environmental Policy, the Group aims to achieve a balance between development and conservation of biodiversity and natural capital, as well as a commitment to prevent deforestation, in the terms described in the environmental policy, focusing especially on the protection of sites of ecological, scenic, scientific or cultural interest.

To this end, the GCS analyses the direct operations that affect its relationship with ecosystems and biodiversity, extending the analysis throughout the value chain, including direct and indirect suppliers in the event that the subcontracted activity is critical for biodiversity. Mitigating the impact on ecosystems through prevention, reduction, restoration and offsetting, especially in protected areas or areas of high biodiversity value, is one of the GCS's main objectives with nature.

Circular Economy

As part of its commitment to sustainability, the GCS integrates the efficient use of resources and the circular economy as key elements in its management model. Under the standards established by the ESRS, GCS prioritises the optimisation of the resources used in its activities, minimising the associated environmental impacts and promoting practices that encourage the durability, recyclability and reuse of materials.

The circular economy is positioned as an essential pillar within the GCS's strategy to guarantee the long-term sustainability of the infrastructures and services offered by the GCS, contributing to the reduction of waste, the preservation of natural resources and the generation of added value throughout the value chain. This approach allows us not only to meet stakeholder expectations, but also to strengthen the GCS's resilience and competitiveness in the face of current environmental and regulatory challenges.

This vision is not limited to the Group's direct operations, but extends to its entire value chain. Collaboration with suppliers to promote the use of sustainable materials, the implementation of reuse and recycling strategies in projects and the adoption of innovative solutions in construction are examples of how GCS promotes circularity in the sector.
